Before You can Graduate

Are You Ready to graduate?

Below are the 6 steps you need to take to ensure you graduate and can participate in the May Commencement Ceremony.


Step 1: See a counselor - Create an Education plan

You will need to schedule an appointment to meet with a counselor to develop your educational plan for the specific degree or certificate you are pursuing. Students can meet with their counselor in EOPS, DSPS, STAR/TRIO, or General Counseling Office

In order to schedule an appointment the following criteria must be met:

  1. You've completed the Math and English Assessments, or have completed a Math and English class (any level). 
  2. If you are currently attending or have attended other colleges/universities outside of SDCCD, you must submit all official transcripts from these colleges. Mail transcripts to:

    San Diego Community College District
    Attn: Transcript Department
    3375 Camino Del Rio South, Suite 100
    San Diego, CA 92108

  3. Transcripts from other colleges/universities must be evaluated for course equivalency. Contact the Counseling Office to request your transcript be evaluated.

Please Note: Depending on the counseling department there may be additional criteria that must be met before making an appointment. Check with  EOPS, DSPS, STAR/TRIO, or General Counseling Office to see if there is additional criteria that must be met.


Step 2: Petition for Graduation

Once you have an educational plan for the degree or certificate you wish to receive, you need to submit a Petition for Graduation.

  • You can submit this petition up to two (2) semesters before you plan to finish your classes/graduate. However, it is recommend to submit your petition the semester before you graduate.

    Example: If you are graduating in Spring, you can petition as early as the Summer semester before, but it is recommended to submit the petition in the Fall semester before.

Where to Submit the Petition for Graduation:

  1. Online on E-Grades https://studentweb.sdccd.edu/e-gradesOR
  2. With a Counselor in EOPS, DSPS, STAR/TRIO, or General Counseling Office, OR
  3. In the Evaluations Office in Room I4-306 (3rd floor of I-400 building)

Deadlines for 2017-2018

  • October 2, 2017 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation ONLY For students transferring to a CSU in either Winter 2018 or Spring 2018 and is completing an Associate Degree for Transfer(ADT).
  • November 14, 2017 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation and be a Fall 2017 graduate. Students filing after this date will be Spring 2018 graduates.
  • February 15, 2018 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation ONLY for students transferring to a CSU in Fall 2018 and is completing an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) in Spring 2018.
  • March 23, 2018 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation for Spring 2018 and ensure your name will be included in the Commencement Program.
    **Students filing after this date but before April 30, 2018 will still be Spring 2018 graduates but their name may not be in the Commencement Program.**
  • April 30, 2018 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation and be a Spring 2018 graduate. Students filing after this date will be Summer 2018 graduates.
  • July 31, 2018 - Deadline to file a Petition for Graduation and be a Summer 2018 graduate.  Students filing after this date will be Fall 2018 graduates.

Step 3: Wait for your degree evaluation to arrive in the mail

Once you submit your Petition for Graduation, a degree evaluation will be completed and then a copy of the evaluation will be mailed to you.

  • Make sure your mailing address is up to date. You can update your mailing address on Reg-E.
  • It may take up to 3-4 months to receive your degree evaluation in the mail.
  • When your evaluation arrives in the mail, READ the evaluation letter carefully and review the copy of your degree evaluation to ensure you are on the right track to complete your major requirements.
  • If you have trouble understanding the evaluation, contact your counselor.

Step 4: Receive an invitation for the Commencement ceremony

The Commencement Ceremony is held once a year in May. Your invitation to participate in the Commencement Ceremony will be  mailed to you beginning late March (for Summer 2017 and Fall 2017 graduates) through mid-April (for Spring 2018 graduates). We will also send invitations by email.

  • Your invitation will include required registration information to participate in the Commencement Ceremony.
  • Make sure your mailing address and email is up to date. You can update your mailing address on Reg-E.
  • If you are not interested in attending the Commencement Ceremony, you do not need to respond.

Step 5: Register to Participate in the Commencement Ceremony

  • Your participation in the Commencement Ceremony is OPTIONAL for you to receive your degree or certificate, but it is strongly encouraged.
  • You must register to participate in the Commencement Ceremony.
  • Your invitation will contain registration information including a website where you will register to participate. 
  • The deadline to register for the 2018 Commencement Ceremony is Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 11:59 pm
  • For a checklist of things you'll need to do for the Commencement Ceremony, visit the Commencement Checklist Page.
  • If you need assistance with the registration website contact the Mesa Evaluations Office at 619-388-2680 or email them at mesaevaluations@sdccd.edu.

After the May 9th deadline, students will need to contact the Evaluations Office (see above for contact info) to see if space and guest tickets are still available.


step 6: Receive Your Diploma in the mail

You will not receive your diploma for your degree or certificate at the Commencement Ceremony. Diplomas for summer, fall, and spring graduates are mailed directly to the students after ALL coursework requirements for your degree or certificate are completed successfully.

  • Diplomas are mailed to the address listed on Reg-E usually 8 weeks after the end of the semester.
  • You will receive a diploma cover at the Commencement Ceremony.
  • Make sure your mailing address and email is up to date. You can update your mailing address on Reg-E.
  • Degrees and/or Certificates of Achievements will be posted on official transcripts on the following dates:
      • Summer 2017 Graduates: October 2017
      • Fall 2017 Graduates: February 2018
      • Spring 2018 Graduates: July 2018

FAQ- Graduation/Commencement:

I don't know if or when I am ready to graduate. What do I do?

  • See a counselor! A counselor will review your academic record to see if you have completed or are about to complete your degree or certificate requirements. Students can meet with their counselor in EOPS, DSPS, STAR/TRIO, or General Counseling Office

I don't have a major, but i have over 60 units. Am I eligible to graduate or walk in the Commencement?

  • Maybe, see a counselor. You may be closer to completing a degree or certificate than you think. Students can meet with their counselor in EOPS, DSPS, STAR/TRIO, or General Counseling Office
  • Need help choosing a major or career? Visit the Career Center to get help choosing the right major or career path for you.

I am going to transfer. is this the same as graduating?

  • No, but you may still be eligible to obtain a degree or certificate and you may be closer than you think. See a counselor to see if you are eligible for a degree or certificate.

I will be finishing my degree/certificate in the summer after the Commencement ceremony. Can I still participate in the May ceremony?

  • Yes, but you must submit your Petition for Graduation by March 23, 2018 to ensure your are evaluated to participate.
  • You will not receive an invitation to participate, so make sure to email the Evaluations Office at mesaevaluations@sdccd.edu after you submit your Petition for Graduation to tell them that you want to participate in the May ceremony.

If I don't go to the Commencement Ceremony, will my name still appear in the Commencement Program brochure?

  • Yes. 
  • If you don't want your name to appear in the Commencement Program brochure please email the Evaluations Office by April 2, 2018 by 11:59 pm at mesaevaluations@sdccd.edu. Make sure to include your full name and CSID# in the email.
